Innovations Tv 300X150

CENTENNIAL, CO - The American Galvanizers Association (AGA) is pleased to announce the October 13, 2016 episode of Innovations with Ed Begley, Jr. will feature a segment on hot-dip galvanizing.  The episode, scheduled to broadcast on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 7:30am ET/7:30am PT via Discovery Channel, will explore how hot-dip galvanized steel impacts your daily life.

The seven minute segment, produced by DMG Productions, will take a behind-the-scenes look at the hot-dip galvanized steel industry and highlight how integral galvanizing is in our lives – often without our realization. Although the galvanizing process has been a mainstay of North American industry for more than 100 years, many people are unaware of what hot-dip galvanizing is and how it protects steel from corrosion for generations.

“Galvanizing has been around for over 250 years, and has played a very important role in North America since the 1890s,” said Eric Buckley, Senior Producer for the Innovations TV Series. “However, many people still don’t know much about the process, or what goes into making galvanized steel. This segment educates and informs on the ins and outs of galvanized steel. We look forward to seeing this all come together on screen, and believe that it will be well received by audiences."

Throughout the segment, audiences will see the myriad uses of hot-dip galvanized steel, and hear three specifiers discuss why they use hot-dip galvanizing in their projects.  First, Tony J. Thornton, Senior Project Manager with RNL, talks about using hot-dip galvanizing on the façade panels and racking system for the roof and side mounted solar panels in the parking structure at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).  Next, George Pond, Senior Vice President of Design & Campus Management at Denver Zoo, explains why hot-dip galvanized steel is the coating of choice to protect critical steel components at the zoo – keeping their animals and visitors safe.  Finally, Doug Davis, Muskingum County (Ohio) Engineer, discusses the advantages of building hot-dip galvanized steel bridges for the local community.

In addition to hearing about hot-dip galvanized steel from the specifier’s perspective, the segment also features AGA personnel. AGA Technical Director, Tom Langill, PhD, explains what hot-dip galvanizing is and how it protects against corrosion. AGA Executive Director, Philip G. Rahrig shares insight into the galvanizing industry and trends in the marketplace, and AGA Marketing Director, Melissa Lindsley discusses the sustainability and longevity of hot-dip galvanized steel and how it is woven into everyday life.

“This is an amazing opportunity for the hot-dip galvanizing industry to step out of the shadows and be recognized by the specification community and general public for its tremendous contribution to our infrastructure.  People rely on hot-dip galvanizing every day, but few realize its value as it tends to hide in plain sight.  This segment can highlight the important role galvanizing plays in protecting steel structures – both in the past, and for future generations,” said AGA Marketing Director Melissa Lindsley.

Following the original broadcast on October 13, 2016, the segment will air on Fox Business and be available on the Innovations website (innovationstelevision.com) as well as through various online channels of the AGA.
