2010 Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Awards Winners Announced!

Deltaport

After another year of impressive submissions, the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Awards competition. More than 90 applications presenting outstanding projects completed in 2009 were submitted to be independently judged by architects and engineers in 13 categories. One project, unless there is a tie, is awarded per category, with the year’s highest honor across all categories awarded the “Most Distinguished” designation. Despite a tight race, 17 submissions were chosen to represent the best of each category, including a new “Lifetime Achievement” designation added to recognize projects in service for a minimum of 15 years.

Our last issue featured a preview of the Industrial submissions; this year, the Industrial Category has produced two noteworthy winners: Deltaport Third Berth Expansion was elevated from the category as Most Distinguished, while the Martin Midstream Rail Terminal won the Industrial category.

I am frustrated in my position as an engineer responsible for specifying corrosion protection systems because initial cost is usually the deciding factor in selection and hot-dip galvanizing is thought to be initially more expensive than paint. How does the initial and life-cycle cost of hot-dip galvanized steel compare to paint?
Life Cycle Cost Calculator

Truth be known, hot-dip galvanizing is often less expensive on an initial cost basis when compared to paint systems with reasonable durability. However, for doubters and those who believe it is important to consider both initial and total cost over the life of the project, aka life-cycle cost, the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) has just released an upgraded, online program to assist you. The Life-Cycle Cost Calculator (LCCC), accessible at www.galvanizingcost.com, provides an initial and life-cycle cost comparison of hot-dip galvanizing with more than 30 paint and zinc metallizing systems.
