Submit your Best to the 2013 Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Awards

The American Galvanizers Association (AGA) is seeking the best hot-dip galvanized steel projects of 2012. The 2013 Call for Entries is extended to any party involved with an after-fabrication hot-dip galvanized steel project completed in 2012. Each year, the Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Awards recognize the special skill and efforts of galvanizers, fabricators, architects, engineers, contractors, and all other parties in their use of hot-dip galvanizing in an innovative, ideal, creative, monumental, or otherwise impressive fashion.

What are the differences between hydrogen embrittlement and strain-age embrittlement?

Although it happens infrequently, embrittlement of steel during the hot-dip galvanizing process is possible. The most known type of embrittlement is hydrogen embrittlement, but this type of embrittlement is very rare during the galvanizing process. If a steel member embrittles during galvanizing, odds are it is due to strain-age embrittlement, not hydrogen embrittlement.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Indianapolis, IN

With scores of silvery seating rows spanning far into the distance, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is the largest race track in the world and an American icon. For decades the only corrosion protection used to protect the massive collection of steel used in this structure was paint; as a result, it was necessary to hire a full-time crew of men to move from one section to another, providing year-round maintenance and upkeep on the deteriorating paint job. The cost of perpetual painting was overwhelming, with no end in sight. Finally, in 1991, IMS decided to test hot-dip galvanized steel by incorporating it into the new construction being built on Turn 3. A thousand tons of steel bleachers were galvanized, to great success.
