Corrosion costs in the United States total nearly $300 billion per year according to a report by Battelle Columbus Labs, Economic Effects of Metallic Corrosion in the United States. The report states that avoidable corrosion still accounts for over $100 billion per year, and concludes "these costs could be reduced by broader application of corrosion-resistant materials and the application of the best corrosion-related technical practices."
A recent 2 year study by NACE International, FHWA, and CC Technologies takes the analysis to an entirely new level of detail, but confirms the same findings - estimating corrosion costs in the United States to total $276 billion per year.
