corrosion

Corrosion is an incessant and costly problem. While we've all seen it and the physical appearance is in fact quite unsightly, the cost of the damage it causes is astronomical.  Corrosion costs in the United States total nearly $300 billion per year according to a report by Battelle Columbus Labs, Economic Effects of Metallic Corrosion in the United States. The report states that avoidable corrosion still accounts for over $100 billion per year, and concludes "these costs could be reduced by broader application of corrosion-resistant materials and the application of the best corrosion-related technical practices."

A recent 2 year study by NACE International, FHWA, and CC Technologies takes the analysis to an entirely new level of detail, but confirms the same findings - estimating corrosion costs in the United States to total $276 billion per year.  The study provides specific research on how corrosion affects almost every industry sector, including: government, utilities, manufacturing, transportation, and infrastructure.  To view the full report online visit www.corrosioncost.com.
