Makeover Revealed:  Redesigned website launched

The new AGA website, www.galvanizit.org has been redesigned with the user in mind.  Launched on 08/08/08, the content-rich site has undergone a complete aesthetic, functionality, and organizational facelift to allow visitors to quickly and efficiently access the information they seek.

Thoughtful reorganization has made it easier than ever to access the wealth of technical information.  The new site has more descriptive sections that mirror the most common reasons for visiting the site, including the following new “technical” sections:  About Hot-Dip Galvanizing & Other Corrosion Protection Systems, Designing & Fabricating for Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Specifying & Inspecting Galvanized Steel, and Galvanized Steel in Use.   > MORE

Q:  I have a structure that will need to be welded.  Is it best to weld the pieces together before or after galvanizing?

A: Welding can successfully be done before or after galvanizing, although the areas of concern are different for each.  Common welded fabrications include pipe, handrails and overlapping plates or beams.  Whenever possible, it is best to weld before galvanizing to ensure total corrosion protection coverage of the welded area.  However, there are certain instances when welding after galvanizing is necessary.

When welding before galvanizing, the symmetry of the steel, both in shape and thickness,  must be taken into consideration to reduce the potential of warping and distortion caused by induced stresses and different rates of cooling during the immersion and removal from the molten zinc.  Additionally, there are three other considerations you must keep in mind; type of weld, the weld material, and cleaning the weld.      > MORE
