Q: What is RoHS and how is it going to affect hot-dip galvanized steel exported to Europe?

A: The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive was adopted in February 2003 by the European Union (EU) and is intended to eliminate or severely curtail the use of six hazardous materials in all products manufactured or distributed in Europe.  RoHS is often referred to as the "lead-free" directive, but it restricts the use of the following six substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE (PBB and PBDE are flame retardants used in some plastics).  Nearly every manufacturer is implementing RoHS compliance and demanding compliant coatings free of these materials.  The EU RoHS directive and the UK RoHS regulations will become effective on July 1, 2006. Read More.
