Project Description

Standing strong and stalwart in the Hudson River, the USS Intrepid has undergone a $60 million restoration from 2006 - 2008. Faced daily with the lapping brine and searing sunshine of a salt-water environment, corrosion is imminent without the superior protection of hot-dip galvanized steel.

With all towers and gangways, as well as roof truss assemblies, and guardrailing hot-dip galvanized, 450 tons of Intrepid’s steel will remain structurally safe and aesthetically pleasing to visitors for decades. Additionally, galvanized steel is maintenance-free, meaning no need to close down operation for tedious touch-ups and repair.

This project required quick turnaround due to a tight, demanding project schedule – and galvanizing accommodated this requirement. The towers were assembled in an offsite location and subsequently transported to the site after being fully erected. A large 500 foot water crane lifted the towers onto the imposing iron maiden. Galvanized steel will keep the Intrepid structurally sound and ship-shape for generations to come.
